SETWIN set to close due to negligence

hyderabad: the organisation which provided employment opportunities to hundreds of youth in the old city for almost one and a half decade, is on the verge of closure. the society for employment promotion and training in twin cities, popularly known as setwin, lost its prominence due to negligence by the state government. the society was launched on august 15, 1978, under the special employment schemes to benefit one lakh youth in the twin cities with a special focus on the old city.its main objectives were training, leading to self/wage/job employment, promoting self employment ventures for educated and uneducated unemployed youth and production programmes, capable of providing piece wage employment to poor and destitute men and women. led by an ias officer as its director and assisted by other senior officials, setwin met its objectives for more than 15 years since its formation, but with the government not paying much attention on its functioning, it constantly failed to meet the targets. since 1997, setwin has been shrinking and more than 15 training centres and other production units have been closed. except for the home service centres, being managed by individuals trained by the society, setwin has lost its presence in the entire old city. “till 1996, setwin used to get funds from the government for various self-employment and training schemes. but since the introduction of pmry, cmey and other schemes, the government continued to reduce setwin’s budget and presently there is no budget allocation for such schemes,’’ a setwin official said. till 1994, setwin’s had an advisory committee headed by an ias officer to suggest measures for the improvement and development of society in the old city. but the government did not reconstitute the committee after its term lapsed in 1994. due to lack of funds and official supervision, setwin is now confined to its head office at purani haveli.
